Working and resting are hardwired into every human being because each of us is created in the image of God.
“Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.” (Genesis 2:1-3)”
God works hard so we work hard.
We were made to work so we should work and work hard. Just like God, we work first and enjoy the fruits of our labor afterward. That’s how we were created.
God rested so we rest well.
Just like God, we rest and in so doing, we enjoy what we have created. Each day of creation, God said, “Nice.” He didn’t just stop working for a few hours, he stopped and looked and enjoyed what he had created. Part of resting is enjoying.
We were created to work hard and rest well.
Why? Because both working hard and resting well are Gospel issues. When we work hard, we represent Jesus (Col. 3:22-23). When we rest well, we trust Jesus (Heb. 4:9-10).
